Structures

Experimental characterization and testing

Within the C3S research group we perform full-scale testing of all types of concrete elements such as beams, slabs, columns, walls, tunnel linings, produced from different types of concretes (with SCMs and recycled aggregates), reinforced with different types of reinforcements (fibers, FRP bars, textile) and tested for different aspects of ultimate limit state behavior (flexure, shear, punching, fatigue, fire resistance) and serviceability limit state behavior (deflections, cracking, vibrations).

Innovative designs

Beside experimental characterization, the members of the C3S research group also work on the design of concrete structures, with a strong focus on innovation, reliability, and applicability in real-world scenarios. For this purpose, advanced non-linear finite element analyses (NLFEA) are employed to simulate structural behaviour under complex loading conditions, including cracking, long-term effects, and non-standard geometries. These tools allow us to gain a deeper understanding of the structural response and to optimize designs beyond the limitations of conventional approaches.

Our team also contributes to the development and refinement of structural design codes, including prEN1992 (Eurocode 2) and the fib Model Code 2020. This work involves the derivation and validation of constitutive models as well as the calibration of safety and partial factors based on probabilistic principles.
