Mission

C3S is dedicated to advancing research on the sustainability of cement-based materials and smart structures, committed to addressing both current challenges and future needs of the construction industry. We develop innovative solutions that enhance material efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and integrate digital technologies to optimize the monitoring and management of the built environment.

Through national and international collaborations with other research centres and enterprises, we combine experimental research, analytical approaches, and numerical modelling to deliver data-driven methodologies and technological solutions that improve construction processes, support informed decision-making, and extend the service life of infrastructures. Furthermore, C3S focuses on the transfer of research developments to the industrial and business sectors through long-term collaborations with companies. The members of the group actively contribute to standardization committees to support the implementation of these innovations.

Our work combines sustainability principles with digital technologies to improve how structures are designed, monitored, and managed throughout their service life. To this end, we maintain close ties with industry to solve real-world technical challenges and ensuring that our research translates into practical, high-impact solutions. This strong connection to the productive sector is at the core of our mission.

We also view research as a fundamental part of training the next generation of researchers and professionals. By aligning our research and educational efforts with the needs of the industry, we help prepare professionals who can contribute to innovation and sustainability across the construction ecosystem. This approach strengthens the link between academia and industry and reinforces the role of the university as a driver of economic and social progress

Smart Engineering is a UPC spin-off that delivers advanced solutions in structural engineering, monitoring systems, and decision-support tools, bringing cutting – edge research from C3S directly into real – world applications.
